The Importance of Screening Mammograms
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect time to remind everyone how easy it is to get a screening mammogram, even without an order from a physician. Many imaging centers now offer walk-in or self-referred mammograms, making it more accessible for women to take control of their health.
While a mammogram can sometimes be uncomfortable, the few minutes of discomfort are worth it. Mammograms are one of the best tools we have for detecting breast cancer early. The earlier we catch it, the easier the treatment and the fewer side effects you’ll experience.
If you find the process particularly painful or uncomfortable, talk to your doctor. In some cases, medication can be prescribed to ease discomfort before the imaging. You don’t have to suffer through the process.
If an abnormality is found on your screening mammogram, don't panic. Often, a follow-up ultrasound or diagnostic mammogram is recommended to take a closer look at the area of concern. If the spot still looks concerning, the next step is typically a breast biopsy to evaluate the cells and tissues more closely. This allows your healthcare team to determine whether the finding is pre-cancerous or cancerous and guide you toward the right treatment.
While getting screened for cancer can be nerve-wracking—no one wants to receive a positive result—remember that early detection gives us more options and less invasive treatments. It’s much better to catch something early, when treatment can be more straightforward and the outcomes more favorable.
Stay safe and empowered by getting your mammogram done this month. It’s a proactive step you can take to protect your health.
