Staying on Track with Movement During the Holidays

I often hear about the challenges of staying consistent with movement routines, especially during the holidays. One of the biggest frustrations patients share is the struggle to restart their regular workout routine after a holiday break. It’s no surprise—routine disruptions can make it harder to maintain momentum. The good news? There are simple ways to navigate these changes and stay active during the holidays while still enjoying the season.

Why Holiday Disruptions Matter

If you’re used to starting your day with an early morning workout, the holidays might throw a wrench into your plans. Sleeping in, traveling, or hosting family and friends can shift your schedule and leave you feeling out of sync. But the key isn’t to stress over keeping your exact routine; it’s to create a holiday-specific plan that allows for flexibility without losing the habit of movement.

The Power of a Holiday Workout Routine

Instead of aiming for your usual hour-long workout during the holidays, plan for something shorter and more adaptable. For example:

  • Keep It Short: Try a 15- to 20-minute workout first thing in the morning, even if you wake up later than usual. It could be yoga, a quick strength circuit, or dancing to your favorite playlist.

  • Make It Fun: Choose activities that feel different or enjoyable—something you look forward to rather than feel obligated to do.

  • Include Family: Invite your family to join you. A group yoga session, a family stretch, or even a holiday-themed workout can be a great way to connect while staying active.

This approach helps you maintain the habit of starting your day with movement, making it easier to transition back to your regular routine post-holiday.

Get Moving with Family Traditions

Another great way to stay active is to incorporate movement into your holiday traditions. Here are a few ideas:

  • After-Meal Walks: One of my favorite traditions is taking a long, slow family walk after Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a wonderful way to connect with loved ones, aid digestion, reduce bloating, and help stabilize blood sugar after indulging in holiday treats.

  • Active Outings: If you’re traveling or exploring, walk around vacation spots or parks. It’s an easy and enjoyable way to keep moving while making memories.

  • Family Sports or Games: Organize a casual game of soccer, basketball, or even tag. These activities bring everyone together and keep you active without feeling like exercise.

Embrace Flexibility and Joy

The holidays are meant to be a time of joy and connection, so don’t let the pressure to stick to a perfect routine overshadow the season’s spirit. Instead, think of movement as a gift to yourself—a way to feel good, reduce stress, and stay energized.

By keeping your workouts shorter, more flexible, and family-inclusive, you’re giving yourself the best chance to stay on track without burning out. When the holidays are over, you’ll find it much easier to jump back into your regular routine because you never fully stopped moving.
